Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore paid tribute to support for Ukraine from the local community in Parliament.
In a speech to the House of Commons, the MP addressed the “barbaric” actions of Putin and shared examples of sanctions that have been implemented by the UK government to “punish” Putin’s regime and cripple the Russian economy.
These included sanctioning over 1,500 individuals and entities affiliated with the Russian state and freezing £275 billion of personal assets.
Speaking in the chamber, Moore stated:
“This year we have given a total of £9.3 billion of humanitarian, economic and military support. We are also training many Ukrainian pilots and troops…We have also committed to train 20,000 Ukrainian troops this year, building on the success of the training programmes we have put in place which saw 11,000 Ukrainian troops trained last year, and we have provided £4.7 billion in economic and humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people.
The MP also heralded the UK’s efforts to welcome over 230,000 Ukrainian refugees, paying tribute to residents across Keighley, Ilkley, Silsden and the Worth valley for their “overwhelming generosity”, with Mr Moore saying:
“I am proud to say that many of them have made Keighley, Ilkley and other parts of my constituency their home, and I have been pleased to meet many of them.”
Paying tribute to local organisations Robbie Moore MP said:
“I would like to praise the fantastic community work that has been done locally over the past year to support the Ukrainian people. The Keighley Ukrainian Association, The Good Shepherd Centre, and The Ilkley and Surrounds Support for Ukrainian Evacuees are just a few examples of local organisations that have been an example to us all. I am of course not surprised by overwhelming generosity showed by our local community, and I know our support for Ukraine is still steadfast”.
