Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore has met with manufacturing and engineering business leaders at the Keighley College Employers Board to discuss ways to encourage more young people to pursue careers in industry.
The meeting brought together representatives from some of Keighley’s leading manufacturing, engineering, and technology-based businesses to discuss the challenges in recruiting skilled workers and how stronger partnerships between local businesses and vocational training providers can help bridge the skills gap.
Discussions focused on driving forward a strong vocational skills agenda, ensuring that young people have access to high-quality training and clear pathways into skilled careers.
Mr Moore also recognised the crucial role that Keighley College plays in equipping young people with practical skills, helping to meet the needs of local industries and supporting long-term economic growth.
The local MP praised Keighley’s ‘world-class’ manufacturing and engineering sector, highlighting its contribution to local employment, economic development, and the wider UK economy.
Commenting on the meeting, Robbie Moore MP said:
“Keighley’s manufacturing and engineering industries helped build our town – providing highly skilled jobs, driving innovation, and strengthening our local economy.
But like many industries, they face challenges in recruiting skilled workers. That is why strengthening the links between local businesses and vocational training colleges is so important – ensuring that young people have access to high-quality training and clear pathways into careers.
One of my priorities is to drive forward the vocational based skills agenda and to encourage apprenticeships, so that businesses can benefit from locally based talent and equip our next generation with the practical skills and knowledge needed to thrive in modern industry.
A big thank you to the Keighley College Employer board and everyone who took part in this important discussion.”
