Local MP Robbie Moore has praised the work of the Friends of Ilkley Rail Station (FOIRS) in Parliament, highlighting their efforts to improve transport connectivity and facilities at Ilkley Train Station as it marks its 160th anniversary.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Robbie Moore commended Steven Thornton and his team at FOIRS for their work in developing a business case to enhance interconnectivity between the train station and local bus services.
The local MP also raised the need for public toilet facilities at the station, calling on the Government to support the project.
In response, Leader of the House Lucy Powell joined in praising FOIRS, acknowledging the importance of improved transport links and station accessibility.
She also voiced her strong support for the provision of public toilets, stating that the Government is committed to improving access across the transport network, including at Ilkley Train Station.
It comes after The Ilkley Rail & Bus Board—comprising Friends of Ilkley Rail Station (FOIRS), Network Rail, Northern Rail, West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), Bradford Council, Ilkley Business Improvement District (BID), Robbie Moore MP, Climate Action Ilkley, Ilkley Civic Society, and Ilkley Town Council—announced that they will be working with award-winning architects and urban design specialists Landolt and Brown to conduct an in-depth feasibility study and framework master plan for the Ilkley Transport Hub.
Robbie Moore MP said:
"This year marks the 160th anniversary of Ilkley Station—a vital transport link for Ilkley. It was therefore great to pay tribute to the fantastic FOIRS—Friends of Ilkley Rail Station—in Parliament this morning after the news that funding has been secured to develop a business case to transform Ilkley Station into one of the best transport hubs in the country.
The vision is to create the best Town Transport Hub in the UK for Ilkley, focusing on improved facilities, new toilets, greater accessibility, and better transport links.
A huge well done to the entire FOIRS team, Ilkley BID, and all those involved in this project.
Responding to Mr Moore in the House of Commons, Leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell MP said:
"May I join the hon. Member in congratulating the Friends of Ilkley Train Station on all that they are doing to improve the experience for train users? The interchange with local buses is absolutely vital. I strongly support the provision of public toilets—lack of toilets is a particular bugbear of mine. This Government are taking great steps to ensure access for all on our transport network, including at Ilkley train station."
