Keighley’s MP Robbie Moore has hit out at the decision to close a village post office.
The Co-op confirmed last week it is ceasing to operate the facility from its Oakworth store, claiming it's "not sustainable".
Expectations are the post office will shut by the end of May.
Robbie Moore MP said:
"It is deeply disappointing that the Co-operative Group has chosen to withdraw Post Office services from its Oakworth store. The Co-op promotes itself on being a fair and community-focused business, yet this decision will have a huge negative impact on Oakworth residents who rely on these services every day. This is a point I raised directly with their National team earlier this month.
“I’m also growing increasingly frustrated with the Post Office itself. The Post Office know Oakworth is a growing village, and forcing residents to travel elsewhere for essential services simply isn’t good enough. I have now met with the Post Office’s national team, and stated that I expect them to work with the community to secure a new provider within the heart of Oakworth as soon as possible.
“Ultimately, these closures are clearly part of a much bigger problem. Like in Haworth, Post Office closures keep happening and yet there seems to be no real plan to fix the broken business model behind them. The Post Office must get to grips with its failure to maintain a sustainable network in our communities and I will be taking this issue to Westminster to campaign for a proper long-term solution from the government.”
