Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore has praised the work of People First Keighley and Craven following a dedicated men’s health event aimed at supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of men with learning disabilities.
The event, held in Keighley, brought together local members of the SEND community for an afternoon of health-focused sessions, football, and free health checks provided by Wharfedale, Airedale and Craven Alliance and Keighley Healthy Living. Designed to create a safe and inclusive environment, the event encouraged open conversations around topics that can often be difficult to talk about – including testicular cancer and the importance of regular screenings.
Men with learning disabilities are far more likely to experience serious health issues, yet are significantly less likely to access routine health checks or cancer screenings. The event served as a vital reminder of the need to make healthcare more accessible and to give people the confidence to speak up and seek help when needed.
Commenting after the event, Robbie Moore MP said:
“It was brilliant to join People First Keighley and Craven for their men’s health event – an afternoon full of energy, connection, and vital conversations. Far too many men with learning disabilities are being left behind when it comes to healthcare, and that has to change. This event was a fantastic example of how we can break down those barriers and give people the support they need.
People First Keighley and Craven do a brilliant job advocating for people with learning challenges, and I’d encourage anyone in our SEND community to get involved in their work: https://www.peoplefirstkc.com. A huge thank you to them and to the fantastic teams from Wharfedale, Airedale and Craven Alliance and Keighley Healthy Living for making the day such a success.”
