Council urged to act as parts of Silsden left in darkness

Residents in Silsden have been left in the dark after a Bradford Council contractor removed street lighting from a number of streets in the town but hasn’t replaced them yet.

Residents on several streets across Silsden say they have had no street lighting for well over two weeks due to ongoing street light re-fittings, raising concerns over a lack of visibility at night-time where the replacement lighting works are underway. Safety concerns have also been raised.

One resident said it was impossible to see the holes in the ground and the barriers erected by Bradford Council contractors undertaking the replacement works, with locals now calling for accountability.

Local MP Robbie Moore visited the streets affected last week to survey the problem and is now calling for urgent action, saying:

“Following correspondence from constituents and conversations on the doorstep in Silsden, I am aware that a good number of streets have now had no street lighting at all for well over two weeks now.

This is quite rightly causing concerns amongst residents around the safety of our streets at night, and quite frankly it is ridiculous that Bradford Council have taken so long to undertake their streetlight replacement scheme.

I have now chased Bradford Council for a response and stated that leaving residential streets in complete darkness for a significant period of time is unacceptable. I also have asked Bradford Council to provide me with an update, which I will share with constituents when received.”
